Why we love the cheese
Not only is Sogn Tomme one of the best cheeses made in Minnesota, it’s one of our favorite sheep cheeses made in the USA. Shepard’s Way creamery is nestled along country highways in Nerstrand, Minnesota. The creamery is run by shepherding husband Steven and Cheesemaking wife Jodi. Of their catalogue of incredible cheeses, Sogn Tomme is a standout, featuring a wild rind and semi-firm texture. Tart, creamy, herbal, and complex, Sogn is a wonderful expression of Minnesota terroir.
Why we love the wine
Rejoice! The 2023 vintage rosé is starting to arrive on our shelves. Although it's not quite summer yet, the 2023 Alexander Valley Vineyards Sangiovese Rosé is the perfect bottle to kick off rosé season. This juicy rosé is just as comforting as it is refreshing. There are bright notes of strawberries, citrus, and flowers on the palate and the wine’s finish is long and strong.
Why we love the pairing
We say it a lot, but it’s true: Sheep milk is hard to pair. The flavor is delicate yet complex, the texture rich, the cheese often tart. A sangiovese rosé with more skin contact has the perfect amount of tannin to stand up to the Sogn’s richness. The rosé’s fresh, fruity notes brighten the cheese and provide a perceived sweetness that balances the earthier notes of the cheese. The duo is light and optimistically sunny, with enough heft to be comforting during the grayer Minnesota days.
What else you should do with it
This is a great pairing to let the wine and cheese sing on their own. If you want to bump it up a notch, grab the Inna Strawberry jam and enjoy a little dollop on a piece of Sogn. Optional, add a rosemary cracker for a fruity, herbal bite.
